This article discusses the broad use of space‐based resources to study climate change and the historical efforts to understand this effort. The historiography of this subject is still in its infancy, but there are several benchmark studies that focus on NASA's efforts along these lines. The key work of Erik Conway, Mark Bowen, and other recent researchers inform this study. This article concludes with a discussion of possibilities for future historical studies in climate change and spaceflight. WIREs Clim Change 2011 2 412–427 DOI: 10.1002/wcc.114
