Overviews

Neural progenitor cells and their role in the development and evolutionary expansion of the neocortex
Published Online: Nov 16 2016
DOI: 10.1002/wdev.256
The evolutionary expansion of the mammalian neocortex (compare human (right) with mouse (left)) is primarily due to an increased and prolonged proliferative and neurogenic capacity of the neural stem and progenitor cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ), notably the outer SVZ (oSVZ), reflected by a thickening of this germinal layer (bottom cartoons). Evolutionary neocortex expansion is accompanied by increased folding of the pial surface, which gives rise to a gyrencephalic (e.g., human, right) rather than lissencephalic (e.g., mouse, left) neocortex (middle cartoons).

Building and maintaining joints by exquisite local control of cell fate
Published Online: Sep 01 2016
DOI: 10.1002/wdev.245
Building joints involves local control of chondrocyte and supporting cell fate, with defects in this process having long‐lasting effects on joint integrity.
