Triangulating Neanderthal cognition: A tale of not seeing the forest for the trees
Published Online: Sep 12 2020
DOI: 10.1002/wcs.1545
Inferences on Neanderthal cognition, culture, and language are inherently unreliable when drawn on a case‐by‐case basis. Though some uncertainties remain, a broad interdisciplinary synthesis creates a compelling case in favor of high‐functioning Neanderthals.

The time‐course of speech perception revealed by temporally‐sensitive neural measures
Published Online: Aug 07 2020
DOI: 10.1002/wcs.1541
This review focuses on temporally‐sensitive cognitive neuroscience approaches that allow us to directly measure early perceptual processes, with the goal of elucidating new models of speech perception and spoken language comprehension. Overall, the data provide support for two key principles: (a) speech perception is based on gradient representations of speech sounds and (b) speech perception is interactive and receives input from higher‐level linguistic context at the earliest stages of cortical processing.
