Integration of fast acting energy storage systems in existing pumped‐storage power plants to enhance the system's frequency control

The integration of flywheels or supercapacitors in existing pumped‐storage plants is economical, little intrusive, environmentally friendly, and yields an energy storage plant with all necessary features for the integration of renewable energy: fast active and reactive power response, large energy storage capacity and an extraordinary capability to withstand a vast number of charge–discharge cycles.
